About the Role

Oaklight Environmental Consulting (Oaklight) is an agile, mission-driven environmental startup focused on delivering support to power clients navigating the energy transition and transportation clients working to grow critical infrastructure projects across the nation. Our mission is to deliver exceptional projects for a brighter future. In addition to the typical work products produced by an environmental consulting company, the Oaklight GIS Analyst will be heavily involved in routing and siting energy infrastructure. Routing and siting projects will put the GIS Analyst in direct contact with client teams and will make them essential to securing the project approvals necessary for the deep electrification of the U.S. energy system.

We are looking for a sharp, creative, and adaptable GIS Analyst who thrives in a collaborative, evolving startup environment. As GIS Analyst for Oaklight, you will play a pivotal role in the spatial analysis, data management, and visualization of projects across a wide range of clients. You’ll be expected to work independently and collaboratively to support multi-disciplinary teams and deliver data-driven solutions. You will also have an opportunity to work with company partners to create corporate procedures and implement innovative solutions. This is your opportunity to build an exceptional GIS backbone for a company that relies on geospatial analysis.

Applicants with demonstrated ability in using ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro 3.X and experience developing web and mobile platforms using the ESRI ArcGIS environment are encouraged to apply. There will be an opportunity to work on advanced projects if the applicant has the ability and interest to code and develop new geospatial tools.

Core Competencies


Project Management: Implements relevant components of the Oaklight project management system in a consistent manner. Applicable elements include archiving files, providing and receiving peer review for external deliverables, clearly communicating scope, schedule, or budget conflicts, and meeting quality requirements for work.

Teamwork: Works well in a team setting with technical experts and clients and is adept at listening to the needs of others and converting those needs into internal and external deliverables. Communicates regularly to determine company, client, and project needs

Time Management: Is able to independently prioritize needs and tasks at daily, weekly, and longer intervals. Clearly communicates priorities to team members.


GIS Competencies

Cartography: Produces maps that share a consistent format across the Oaklight system, are attractive, and convey data-rich geographic information.

GIS Analysis: Utilizes GIS applications to perform advanced spatial analysis or data conversion or manipulation, including creating scripts to automate geoprocessing workflows.

Data Management: Converts data from multiple sources and formats (e.g., CAD, GIS, GPS, image, text) to a consistently named structure, coordinate system, and/or common schema.

Geodatabase Development & Design / Data Models: Utilizes GIS applications to build a GIS to conduct data mining and conversion. Defines data requirements needed to support business processes.

GPS Device/Applications: Configures and troubleshoots GPS devices and mobile data collection applications.

Problem Solving: Translates client needs into solutions using GIS technology.

Web Applications/Services: Creates interactive web applications for use with by colleagues, clients and the general public.


Responsibilities


  • Create consistent and standardized GIS systems and processes to manage and analyze data for a growing company.

  • Create and maintain GIS data libraries, databases, web maps, and mobile collection tools.

  • Produce report and presentation quality figures using sound cartographic methods.

  • Share data with other sources (e.g., CAD).

  • Analyze opportunities and constraints data in support of infrastructure routing and siting.

  • Present findings in meetings with colleagues and clients.


Your duties may evolve from this initial list as the needs of Oaklight change.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Natural Resources, or other related discipline.

  • A minimum of 3 years progressively more complicated GIS work experience.

Work Location 

This position is based in Madison, WI or Austin, Texas, but we will consider candidates in other locations. 


It is desired that the position report to the office at least two days each work week to foster collaboration. Travel is expected to be a limited to periodic field deployment to conduct windshield verification of geographic features for infrastructure routing and siting projects. The successful candidate may on occasion travel to professional meetings and internal business meetings.

Salary Range & Benefits

Oaklight has created the below salary range based on the duties and location associated with this requisition. The experience, education, capabilities of the application may affect compensation.


USD $66,000.00 - USD $80,000.00 / YR


Oaklight offers competitive compensation and benefits. This position may be eligible for a discretionary bonus from time to time, considering, among other things, exceptional individual and corporate performance.
